Charter Member Patrick Wayne Ferrie, 92, of Scandia, and a lifelong area resident, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Rouse Warren County Home, where he had resided for the last year.
Mr. Ferrie was born December 8, 1918, in Warren, the son of the late John William Heath and Anna Louise Fladry Ferrie. He attended the Hatch Run School and Warren High School. Pat proudly served his country in the Army as an MP with the 202nd MP Co. during WWII serving in England, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He attained the rank of SGT., and maintained a lifelong friendship with many of the MP's that he served with in the 202. After the war Pat owned and operated Ferrie's Grocery Store and Custom Meat Cutting in Russell for many years. He was also a school bus driver for a great number of local students. He served as a constable for Pine Grove Township and was active in the Russell Volunteer Fire Department serving as chief and later becoming a charter member of the Scandia Volunteer Fire Department. Pat was a founding member of the YU Saddle Club. Pat and his wife Phyllis owned and operated the PF Ranch Riding Stable in Scandia, where he enjoyed working with horses as well as oxen and a great variety of other animals on the ranch, with many young people who spent summers at the ranch. Pat will also be remembered as a craftsman, whittling handmade brooms at many local craft fairs. His great sense of humor and love for people and his many roles in life provided him a wide circle of friends and extended family, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
He is survived by three sons, Kelly Ferrie and his wife Linda, Tim Ferrie and his wife Vickie, all of Scandia and Mike Ferrie, Daytona Beach, FL; a brother Heath Ferrie and his wife Myrtle, Russell; a niece, Courtney Ferrie, who Pat and Phyllis helped raise, and numerous other nieces and nephews; six grandchildren, Kim Ferrie Gertsch and her husband Ed, Amey Ferrie Abbott and her husband Kevin, Tom Ferrie, Alex Ferrie, Jon Ferrie, and John Rickert; and two greatgrandsons, Cody Gertsch and his wife Sarah and Tyler Ferrie.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 1991; three sisters, Rachel Fox, Mary Lou Roberts, and Anna Mae Rowley and two brothers, Stuart Ferrie and Dennis Ferrie.
In following with Pat's wishes, a private burial was held at the Scandia Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Scandia Fire Hall on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM.
